Needle-felted animals are typically adorable. They can’t seem to help it. I have seen so many SERIOUSLY cute needle-felted critters online, that I needed to try this craft for myself.
Felting is interesting, because you are basically just matting wool fibers with a barbed needle. If you are like me, and don’t often bother with directions, or tips from people who know what they are doing. You might find yourself buying a pack of wool roving in lovely and seductive colors, a felting needle, and think you are done…
Really, you are. The wool roving is easy enough stuff to work with. You pull it apart, and on a piece of foam, or felting mat, you start poking, prodding, and manipulating the fibers with your needle until they begin to “felt” together into the shape you were trying to accomplish.
I read somewhere online that today is National Bird Day, and whether that means anything to you or not, I decided that bluebirds were a good enough first project to begin with. I didn’t really have a pattern to follow, and my little birdies still turned out pretty cute. I know they could use some finessing, but for a first project, I’m pleased.
To see some REALLY incredible felted birds, check out the beautiful flickr set from Lauren Alane.
I may need to crack into a craft book or look online for some felting tips and directions now that I know just how cute well-done felting can be! I feel more felted projects in my future- this is only the tip of the warm and fuzzy iceberg!

Very sweet – I’ve always been intrigued by needle felting but a little scared to try it. Perhaps it’s time to cast off the fear!
