This weekend was my mom’s birthday. My mom is not an easy one to shop for. While she has many interests and hobbies, she also never seems to WANT anything. She loves crafting, she loves her family and my god does she love her pug, Howie.
After picking up a few little odds and ends for her, I felt like something was still missing from her gift. I decided I would needle-felt a pug; an homage to her devoted and loving meatball of a dog.
Please note that I did not say I would needle-felt a “Howie”. This thing looked like a baby silver-back gorilla for HOURS and just when I was starting to curse the day I had decided to make the pug at all, I added the ears, and some heavy eyebrow wrinkles, and it started to SOMEWHAT resemble a dog. But when it came to capturing the charm of my mom’s little beast, I feel like I still missed the mark.
This was my second attempt at needle-felted version of a live pet, and while I did manage to get it out of that awkward gorilla-stage, there is still some level of finesse I am missing before I can call these things “needle-felted pet sculptures.”
Like all crafts, I suppose it will take more time, and practice…
But in the meantime, my mom loved it and that was all that really mattered to me!
