Oven-fresh bread loaves, tartlets, scones, cookies, and bars shimmer under a dusting of raw cane sugar behind the glass partition at Huckleberry in Santa Monica. The glass may very well be a drool guard as this cafe on Wilshire is known for using organic, locally-grown ingredients to make delectable baked goodies like the blueberry lavender tart with velvety sweet custard and a light and flaky crust, or the hand-crafted Fried Egg Sandwich with Niman Ranch bacon, and Gruyere cheese served on a bed of arugula and country bread.
The towering blackboard menu above the counter is written in chalk, and while the affect is friendly and approachable, the variety may be daunting to first-timers. While parking is plentiful in the lot behind Huckleberry, seating is limited so large parties may consider ordering their vittles to go. The interior is light and airy, and the staff are friendly as they sling espresso and brew up loose leaf teas. Open Sunday-Tuesday Huckleberry is a worth a visit, and the blueberry lavender tart is absolutely worth a taste.
