Needle-Felted Sloth (You win some, you lose some)

January 13, 2011 By radmegan 8 Comments

Green Sloth
When a friend suggested I needle-felt a sloth, I was overjoyed. Sloths are slow-moving, mostly tree-dwelling animals from South America. They eat and sleep in tree-tops, and make their way to the forest floor once a week for bathroom breaks. They move extremely slowly, and seem to be smiling as they do so. Sloths are fantastic.

The only problem with needle-felting a sloth, is that animal is so darn cute in REAL life, that my felted version seems to pale in comparison!

I worked out the felted sloth’s body pretty easily. I knew I wanted to connect his hands, so that I could hang him on tree branches, wooden spoons, and coat racks… anywhere we might need a surprise burst of cuteness.

When I began working on the sloth face, I ran into trouble. Every photograph I looked at online showed sloths in the most endearing positions with their heart-warming expressions. My woolen green bundle of fibers never seemed to hit the mark. He seemed shy. Like he didn’t want to be felted.

My finished sloth is smiling, green, and does have a fair amount of endearing qualities, but he doesn’t melt me like my other felted friends have. He may re-surface here at some point after some re-working, but for now, I’ll let him be shy, and hang him up in an orchid in the house.
In the meantime, I leave you with an adorable sloth video someone sent me not too long ago. Behold the cuteness of sloths… real sloths. One day left in the Five Days of Felted Friends, and time for me to get back to work on my last woolly creature of the week! See you all tomorrow. I promise to finish the week strong. Thanks for stopping by.
